The Bottom Line
Judith Millers Guides are standards for collectors. Although this guide isn't specific to miniatures (the only reason it doesn't get five stars!) it covers numerous miniature collectibles which are part of well known lines or included in groups of collectibles such as toys, Disneyana etc.
A beginning collector will find this a great starting point for referencing an unknown miniature, especially if it might have been made by some of the major ceramics or figurine makers, or is a popular collectible toy. The photos and text are clear and there is useful background information to help you learn more about collecting.
- Includes clear, well sized photos.
- Covers a wide range of items and prices.
- Good background information sections help new collectors learn.
- Closer looks sections explain key points collectors should know.
- Covers all collectibles, not specifically miniatures.
- More information on determining condition would help beginners.
Description
- Great coverage of pottery, glass, figurines, advertising and collectible toys.
- Good way to learn more about how to collect - what to watch for, how to examine an object.
- Pictures and organization are very clear, typical of DK publications.
Guide Review - Judith Miller's Collectibles Price Guide 2007
The Judith Miller Guides published by Dorling Kindersley deliver clear photos and interesting, current background text. The collector's notes are really valuable to beginners, discussing marks, identifying characteristics and what to watch for when collecting (including fakes). Updated every year, the price guides remain fairly current.
The broad annual changes in the examples covered by these guides means you learn something new from every edition and see a wide range of collectibles in particular fields. The guides help track trends in collecting and popularity of particular items from year to year. The only problem with these books is that the information is so interesting they may start you off in search of new collections!
